at first id be mad but when im told that you did it because of the dog, i'd understand. id also order you to tell me whats happened before you run out next time.

If it was me, I would commend you and phone the press! Why not get the business a mention on the news? "Today, a very brave store worker, John Smith, 21 rescued a Labrador puppy 'fluffy' from certain death. John, who works for ABC Supplies, where good prices and great quality are garunteed, says 'he was only doing what anyone else would do; if they were on their way to ABC Supplies, where good prices and great value are garunteed" etc...

As you boss, I would say that you hadda do what you hadda do. As a human being, I would applaud you. Work doesn't own you, and any employer (as opposed to slave owner) knows there are times when work has to take second place.

I wouldn't have a problem with that....but I'll still leave my initial answer in place below.</edit> Depends on the impact your walking out...and weather you gave any explanation or just vanished while in the middle of doing some task the entire company was counting on begin completed in the next 15 seconds. How exactly are you specially qualified to help a dog that nobody else around could help? If you got to the scene and saw someone else kneeling w/ the dog and said they already called a vet they knew and they were on the way...would you still stay knowing full well you abandoned the hand that feeds you in a time of critical need (assuming you were in the middle of a mission critical task at work that only you could complete on time in the next 30 seconds)? Or is your position something that anyone else could pick up in your absence and you decided the dog would feel better having your love until help arrived? Those are two very different situations and would command 2 very different reactions from me if I was your boss. If you cost the company 90% of their net worth to go help a dog and as a result 345,938 people will lose their jobs in the next 30 days as a direct result of your failure to complete that which you were specially qualified for and trusted to complete, yeah...I'd make sure you were one of the 345,938. If you answered the phone bank in no particular order and one customer was left hanging mid-call...and you left informing others you were going to help the dog that just got hit, I'd prolly let it slide and give you a cube away from the window w/ a street-side view. It's simple quantification of the impact of your choice vs your reasons for doing so. You're quite allowed to value 10 minutes of a random dog's comfort while suffering a traumatic event over the value of a multi-billion dollar global corporation...just be aware that there *is* a price for all actions. If you have a nothing position or are engaged in a nothing task...then the damage was nothing and who cares...go help the dog. If you held the very life-blood of the company an inch away from falling fatally on a razor and still chose the dog, regardless of how many hundreds of thousands of employees would be unemployed if the company went under...then you should not have been in that position, should be fired, and should be lynchmob'd by all the families you destroyed for a fucking dog that *already got hit*.

I guess it would depend on the line of work you are in. I don't think I would yell or terminate you, but it would depend on what ramifications there were with you leaving your post. And if others knew where you were.

commend you of course. but that depends on what our job is? if i am your boss but i were a top layer with a deadline case in 5 minutes to settle a big mulit billion dollar lawsuit for our client, and you just leave to help out the dog? i will not only yell at you but fire you and make sure you do not work in law again and sue you for screwing up my firm.

I would come out and help you with the poor dog, and do everything we could do to save it, and if noone claimed it I would let it be our office mascot :)...how could anyone see a dog get hit by a car and not help it !?!?!...and if you had a boss that would yell at you or fire you for trying to help an innocent animal its probally not the kind of person you want to be working for anyway

I would yell at you and fire you IF you didn't go out and help it and then I would yell at you if you didn't let me go with you to help you care for it. I would then give you the rest of the day off and let you take it to the vet and even help with the vet bill. I am big time dog lover. I will defend them till my death. If I had any life insurance I would leave the ASPCA a big donation when I die. I can put up with a LOT of things in life but when it comes to people abusing/neglecting and not taking care of/making animals suffer, I will not stand for that.. You will have to fight me until there is no fight left in me

If you told me why you were leaving,I would help you out as well and would really admire you as a person. I would however ask that you tell someone you were leaving, that is in case you just left and told no one.

Chances are good that I would commend you. I don't really understand how you could have seen this if you were at work... unless you had a window where you could see the road. That isn't the point though.

I would help you and make sure you know to muzzle its mouth with rags or something like that. you shouldn't pickup an injured dog (or any animal) without doing that. I had a friend that got his face badly bitten because of that.

honestly, some would think its nuts to do so. But I beg to differ. You would do this to be responsible for your actions. But, I would point out to say that leaving your job totally is a little harsh on yourself. If I am the boss, I would consider not to terminate your employment. Commendations is obviously needed. Who doesn't like to be praised?
