The original is still the best - IRC. It's independent of any specific providers and can still be the best way to get a realtime online meeting, as well as support channels.

I never really liked chatrooms. It's nearly impossible to find the room you're looking for, since 99% of them are for "cybersex"...And even if you do find the right chatroom, you can't have a real conversation because by the time you're finished typing your sentence - the subject has already changed since everyone else has ADD.
