To formally resign, you must first read the terms and conditions of service in your contract of employment. They should lay out exactly what you need to do and give the notice required by you. If you can't find this, as a rule of thumb most employers will require one period of the pay cycle (one month if you're paid monthly, or one week if you're paid weekly) as notice, and that the notice is given in writing by you. This means that they have a written statement should things go to tribunal at a later date, and you also have proof of intent. I would recommend passing this personally to your employer, in case it gets lost in the mail. You don't need to state any reasons for resigning, and again anything you do write down can come back to haunt you. The best thing to write is that you have enjoyed your time with the company but are looking to move on and take a new direction, or something of that ilk. It also means you are not burning your bridges. Good luck.
