  • Good question, but I am afraid I do not know the answer. I do know that history books often under-emphasize the might of the Russians in winning the war, and exaggerate the US's role, large as it was. Maybe you will find an answer here - History of US tank battles - http://www.battle-fleet.com/pw/his/Tank%20history%20WW2%20WW1.htm
  • The German had a 10 to 1 kill ratio in their favour against the Sherman tank.
  • Tanks were never designed to be anti-tank weapoms in the first place. Their main uses were to support infantry on the battlefield, and as some kind of mobile artillery. Sherman tanks were light armoured compared to the German panzers. This explains why so many of the American Shermans were destroyed in the war. The German panzers were over engineered and highly sophisticated making them very difficult to mass produce and maintain in a war of attrition. During Russian winters, they had a tendency to freeze up because of very narrow specifications and use of lubricants that were intendened for warmer climates. The Russian T34, on the otherhand, were simply constructed with manual controls and thick angled armoured plating making it very easily massed produced. When disabled on the battlefield by mechanical failure, such components as transmission or engines were lifted out and replaced with very little difficulty. This tank, for my money, was the most successful weapon produced giving the Russians ability to push Germans all the way from Stalingrad to Berlin.
