no dont take any off the frog and how far you trim it depends how much it has grown since it has last been trimmed and how big a hoof it has
-
You should have your horses hooves trimmed about once every six week, you should not do this your self, it should be done by a farrier, as they know what they are doing, if you do not know what you are doing you can make your horse really lame really fast.
-
Don't touch the frog!! This is a job for a trained professional, don't muck around with your horse's hooves yourself.
-
NEVER try to trim your horse's hooves yourself unless you are a trained professional farrier. The frog is a very sensitive part of the foot, and needs to be treated on a regular basis. Farriers know how to deal with overgrown, paddling, and receading hooves.

Never, ever do this yourself. The hoof of a horse is the most important part of a healthy and sound horse. If you make one false move you could perminitly lame your horse for life or it might even have to be put down from nerve damage. Remeber "No Hoof, No Horse." Trimming a horse's hoof is something that should only be done by a trained farrier. They spend at least four years in a real college like Ohio U. or have been apprenteced to a trained farrier. And they all have to pass a broard certification test and have a liscence to prove it. They know how much to take off and how to put the proper angle for the horse's conformation, breed, and type of work they do. They also know the right shoes to put on, how to apply the shoe without hot nailing the horse, making shoes, hoof health, and how to fix problems with trimming and shoeing. And they know better then to trim the frog. That's the horse's toe and it's all living tissue full of nerves and blood vessals.

All of these answers are right on target. This is a job for a professional ONLY. Those of us untrained in this area of horse care need only to be diligent in checking, cleaning and being aware of the condition of our horse's feet and to have the phone number and a good relationship with our Farrier! I will say that, as most experienced horse people know, all horse's hooves are not created equally! Some horses have "problems" with their feet that need extra care. Other horses are blessed with healthy, excellent feet and move in such a way as to naturally wear down almost perfectly...a true BLESSING! Some horses benefit, or even require shoes to avoid creating problems, other's can go barefoot and have no problems at all! How we are using the horse and what surfaces we ride on can also dictate according to the general type and condition of the foot as to if we much shoe the horse. If all you do is gentle pleasure riding on smooth, or soft ground you might not need to shoe, unless your horse simply has a hoof that requires it. Lastly, remember too that special shoeing can frequently correct problems with how a horse places the hoof. It can tie into leg, shoulder and hip issues and support correcting those problems or potential problems. ONLY a qualified Professional can evaluate and determine what is best for your horse, YOUR evaluation comes in as valued upon riding and seeing/feeling if the suggested correction is working to support your horse's good health and joy in movement as problems/discomforts are removed/corrected!
