  • For one thing, no matter how idealistic or sincere the leader is, by human nature, no man ever likes to let go of power once he holds it. After becoming ineffective, a lot of these characters stay around way after their "expiration date", sometimes by illegal or even violent means. Like it says at Jerimiah 10:23 "I well know, o Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step". After listening to some of the speechs made on the floor of the General Assembly at the U.N. yesterday, this becomes even clearer.
  • I would query whether the theory of democracy has ever claimed to work to a perfect society. I think democracy actually claims to work to a "least bad" society. There is no claim that democracy is perfect, only that it is better than all the other systems which have been tried. Communism did not take account of the nature of real humans. Or, in the case of Leninism, claimed to be able to alter that nature, which is not possible in fact.
  • Well, Napoleon said "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy," and some genius more recently said "No plan survives contact with humanity." Humanity is too diverse, too complex and too self-willed for any utopian theory to work out perfectly in practice. Problem is, the people who make plans like these tend to be in love with them, and when the "squares" don't fit into their pigeonholes, out comes the hammer to MAKE them fit.
  • Because human beings are imperfect. If everyone followed the rules of either discipline perfectly, they'd both work perfectly. Poeple are greedy, which is why capitalism can and does fail. People are lazy, which why communism can and does fail.
  • I have never read, been taught or even heard that a democracy is a perfect society. In fact I've always herd quite the opposite. A total democracy is nothing more then mob rule and will never work.
  • Democracy would be much better in a more educated society. Maybe a test should be required to vote or hold office.
  • A corrupt government can totally screw up any ideally sound societal model, whereas an efficient government can pretty much take any societal model and make it function
  • So far as I know, the only close-to-communistic society that worked for more than a few years was the Israeli Kibbutz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbutz A friend of mine lived on a Commune out in the Western US. It worked until there was a group discussion about using Commune funds for the children. Then someone said "how about me?" (He wanted whiskey for himself). And then....
  • communism works :P
