Preschool is a great way for a child to learn how to socialize with other children and to adapt to a structured environment. I'm sure there are numerous studies on the subject-with equal numbers pro and con. Personally, as a retired elementary school teacher and counselor, I would not say it is necessary. I tend to go the other way--let your child enjoy their childhood and give them time to just play.

I started Head Start at age 3 and I'm not sure it really helped. I was smart and inquisitive before and my social skills are actually rather deficient so the adaptation argument is fairly well shot too. It's not necessary and it may actually come back to haunt them (or you) later on.
