Can anti anxiety medications like Xanax or Ativan be helpful for people who not only have anxiety but depression as well

They will make you less anxious, depending on dose. Given with an antidepressive med makes them work together. There is the problem, Ive been on 8 different antidepressants and not one worked. My system doesn't take to many chemicals, Im allergic to most.

Yes Xanax does help with depression, Xanax is a benzodiazapine so it can be very addicting and coming off of it may be hard..SSRI's help with depression as wellas Anxiety such as Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, lexapro and more. Also the SNRI, Effexor(Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor)helps with depression and anxiety..talk to your Doctor about all your options! Good Luck to you

- I agree with AT's thinking on this one. Xanax is great for anxiety but does little or nothing for depression. Paxil can help with depression. I've tried Prozac, Zoloft and Lexapro with limited success. Did not like the side effects though; weight gain and loss of sexual desire.

Yes certain medications do help with both anxiety and depression, you need to check with your doctor and he/she will help prescribe the best medication for you, and the dosage
