I hope not.I love the library.

Oh, I don't think libraries will ever be COMPLETELY obsolete...... I will admit that there is much to be said for the convenience and ease of accessability of the new virtual data bases, but there is still something about a REAL library...... For me, nothing will ever replace the smell and feel of a REAL book....that forgotten tome on the bottom shelf in an obscure corner, with it's gritty pages and musty scent, a badge of honor for it's longevity, a glimpse into the past, where for a moment time stood still and gave us this tangible proof of what was. I love books...They are national treasures, each and every one.....and will NEVER be obsolete.

I think libraries will become information hubs for the internet as well as for print materials. I suspect that each local government will invest in an internet server for its library.
-
I hope not! I would be out of a Job then. I guess I could do something else. But by that time I might be retired any way. :-)
-
In the future, I guess libraries will be more like Internet Cafe's with printed material on the side.
-
No... There will always be the desire for written words on paper, especailly those from the past. I can see libraries become more genealogical and historical in nature, but not become obsolete.

When all books are digitized!!! This is in progress. Then libraries as we now know them would become obsolete, ending up online. There has been the trend toward "paperless offices", mainly due to environmental concerns, but also as a cost-cutting measure. For libraries to go digital would be a logical next step, but that would take decades, most of it spent scanning books. As for how the images will be stored, JPEG is established well enough to be used for general use. Books can be located either by title, author, subject, just like right now. Online library addresses would need to begin with something besides "www" so it cannot be mistaken for a website address, but still be accessible on the internet.

I have some of the oldest books which are out of print and real ancient texts in spiritualism.Libraries cannot become extinct because books are collectables and those who love books will never let it happen, even with the advent of digital books and so on!
-
I don't see libraries as becoming totally obsolete. There will never be enough manpower to totally digitize everything that is available in print. I do see libraries as becoming much smaller and requiring less staff to operate them.
-
No!Has internet ousted news-papers? So libraries will hang out for people like me!
-
I do not think libraries will ever become obsolate. Connosiers of good reading will always prefer the printed book. As the electronic recording of books progresses I see the number of young taking to printed books increasing. Buying books is a waste of resources. People will prefer to have a library as a repository of books. Libraries will continue to exist for all of forseable future.

Some libraries are going virtual that is true. Which is a sad state of affairs as the printed word is now being considered garbage by these Librarians & libraries. (AKA they are putting the books up for sale or worse putting them in the garbage) Its called Weeding and its a painful attempt to drive us the user nuts. My nearby library is doing it right now and its annoying.
-
I don't think so. They do offer free internet access too.
-
My parents would hope so. They just got an increase to their tax bill because of how much the local library needs for their resources and expansion.
-
Alot sooner than everyone thinks.
-
I certainly hope libraries will not become obsolete. The libraries I know have several services going for people of all ages. They have story hour, puppets shows, computer games, etc. for young children. I see students from schools doing research and getting help from librarians, and older people sitting around reading magazines and newspapers. Life is going on in libraries! So if life goes on, so must libraries.
-
they are already becoming a thing of the past here in Indiana. Besides Going online to read a book isn't that bad.
-
libraries will not become obsolete...they will soon contain disks instead of books...thats all really.
-
Funny enough I thought that this morning *again* and I dont think it will be for a very long time but eventually...sadly yes....it looks that way!!
-
Libraries will simply become less physical and more virtual. You wont need to go anywhere to look at physical books, because they will all be scanned in to a computer and you will be able to read it at home.
-
I don't think books will ever become obsolete. Reading a book off a computer screen stinks. I'd never read if I could only read that way.
-
Gosh, I sure hope not! :)
