A shotgun fires a shell (up to 3/4"-ish in diameter) which is basically a plastic case filled with pellets (of various sizes depending on the "gauge"), which scatter and provide a greater likelihood of a hit. They're used for hunting birds or small game. Some shotguns only fire one shot before you have to open it at the hinge, pick out the brass base of the shell, and put another in; double-barreled shotguns have 2 barrels (duh), with others you plug in, I dunno, about 7 shells, then "pump" it like you see on the teevee. . A rifle fires one solid bullet at a time. (Caliber is the fraction of an inch wide the bullet is, eg, .30 cal is 3/10 of an inch wide.)

A difference between a shotgun and a rifle is that a shotgun's barrel has a smooth bore and a rifle's barrel has grooves, in the bore, called "rifling".

A shot gun is a big barrelled gun that come in various sizes .410 and that could be an over and under for this gun can fire a .22 rifled barrell, where as the oldershot guns did not have rifleing. and then you got the 20guage shot gun this gauge really is not that good for hunting fowl I don't care what other people say about a 20gauge they don't have the stopping power as a 12 gauge that come in various sized shells, and you have to watch for what length shell you get make sure you don't try to force a 12gauge 3 1/2 inch shell into a shot gun designed for 2 3/4 you will have problems. A shot gun fires shot like a whole bunch of bee bees where as a rifle shoots a projectile that is rifled down the bore of the barrell. But there are shot guns with rifled barrells. but this is what I know any questions give me a note. bye and watch your ammo.

I do not agree with shadow.There many types of shot guns of different bores and some have rifling barrels, chokes etc and so there are rifles with many varieties and bores. The main difference is in ammo, rifle shots contain cordite explosive whereas shot guns cartridges use gun powder.
