Cotton is also a dirt catcher--and I doubt that it soaks up humidity--so throw it away, or rather save it for something you need a cotton ball for. But don't put it back. It's served its purpose.

The cotton can be removed and tossed out, or you can keep it to use with nail polish remover. Just be sure this particular cotton isn't used for swabbing or dressing a wound, as the medicine might effect the injury in some way.
