Help answer this question below.

My computer turns on, but it won't go any further: none of the sounds it would normally make as it turns on. Screen is black. All USB ports -- mouse, keyboard, my flash drive -- will not work but the disk drives, fans and lights do. No BIOS beeps at all.

    if you are brave enough take off the side and take out the cards, ram etc. and reseat them incase they have become loose also try takin out the cmos batttery(if you do this you may have to reset the time and some other settings) it is a small silver disk about 2cm accross(size of a 2p if u in england)if this doesnt work most likely you have a blown component(ram,cpu,mainboard etc.) but sometimes this does work if youre lucky

    Sounds like your motherboard has failed. How old is it? You might want to buy a new one, now a days their fairly reasonably priced, and worth paying for opposed to a repair shop.

    This happened to me with my laptop. i dont know if it cold be the same thing, but for me it was that my motherboard was fried. hope for you that its something much more easier to deal with. good luck!!
