They're rivals, well more like arch nemesis if you will. Incidentally, the same can be said for Luigi and Waluigi. (They sure didn't try with THAT name.)

Strictly rivals,but there is a morale difference between them. Wario looks only for personal gain, while Mario looks for helping others and being a hero.

Wario is Mario's evil counterpart, well more greedy than lazy. He was created by Gunpei Yokoi, the inventor of the original gameboy, the virtual boy, and the creator of the Metroid series. He first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins as the main villain. In the game, Wario has stolen Mario's castle, and Mario has to obtain 6 golden coins to get the castle back. A Nintendo Power Comic reveals the reason Wario hates Mario is due to Mario bullying Mario, when they were kids, but it's more like every time they play together Wario ends up getting hurt.

they are ex lovers. Wario is determined to get Mario back of luigi after mario cheated on him with luigi. peach is wario's and mario's love child. and daisy is the love child of yoshi and a shy-guy... waluigi is just there to watch.

mario and wario are cousins. wario is marios alter ego. just like luigi and waluigi. (notice thier hats, warios is an upside-down M and waluigis is an upside-down L)
