    By 1800 the white dress with a veil was definitely the one to wear. As usual with fashion, it began in London, spread to other cities and towns and then to rural areas.

    Married in white,
    You have chosen all right.

    Ashamed to be seen.

    Married in blue,
    You will always be true.

    Married in yellow,
    Ashamed of your fellow.

    Queen Victoria was the first woman to wear a white wedding dress. After that every one else did it because it was proper to do whatever the queen did.

    Prior to that the concept of the wedding gown was practically unheard of. Only very wealthy women and royalty ever wore them. Before Queen Victoria's white gown, the preferred color was Red or Gold.

    Common women wore their "Sunday Best" which was usually a simple dress of black, brown, or dark green cotton. Upper class common women often worn flower printed calico in shades of pale blue or maize yellow.
