  • A percentage doesn't go there due to "administrative costs" and these costs need to be closely monitored too as unscrupulous types might want to skim off the top.
  • In the U.S., any group registered as a non-profit must show how the dollars are used. At least 20% usually goes to administrative costs - and often much more. To be fair, it DOES cost money to operate a charity. There's rent, payroll, utilities, advertising etc. If you have a specific charity you are concerned about, ask to see a copy of thier annual report. If you want to make a donation but are worried about where it goes, make a donation-in-kind. Dog food to the shelter, canned food to the food bank or even things like boxes of copy paper, supplies etc.
  • That is true. There is one charity I have heard of with the digging of wells in Africa. This organization is small and almost every cent goes to the digging of the wells.Charities need to cut down their administration costs and stop paying their volunteers. It is not a charity when everyone is getting paid to volunteer and 20% of the money goes to the needy.
  • no, but it varies how much gos to charity. when i was in the military we had the "combined federal campaign", it was a charity drive and the cool part was that each charity had to list how much percentage of their money received went to administrative costs. some were as high as 70%! needless to say, few of us donated to those ones. it's usually best to donate to local charities because they will have the fewest administrative costs and more money will go to doing good.
