  • You may be hearing the change in wind noise as the plane lowers its flaps. This changes the shape of the wing giving it more lift.
  • It may be the doppler effect. A noisey body approaching will get higher in pitch, then lower as it moves away. This is because of the sound waves being bunched together, then spaced farther apart.
  • Depending on how close your house is to the end of the runway, you may be hearing the pilot reducing power to slow for touchdown. I hear that a lot at my house, because I'm less than two miles and just off the final approach.
