The Bible says that, as far as we can, we should abide by the laws of the country we live in. Most developed countries say that an official marriage is the best way, and so, as Christians, we should officially marry.

Common law marriage isn't legal in all states. And if I'm not mistaken it requires the couple to "live in sin" as it were for something like 7 years prior to taking effect where it is. However a Universal Life priest can fix that easy enough. Check out http://www.ulc.net/
