the idea of religion, whether it's right or not. is that you unarguably try to be a beter person if you belive a higher power is commanding you to do so , (although plenty of whackjobs think it means do what THEY want and call it god's work, which is just plain sick.) so thus, help the poor, do unto others what you want done, are all unversal truths that, the more people do it the better the world becomes. i for one like to think i don't make the world a worse place to live, but a better one for everyone else and myself, and my kids if i ever have any. so religion, in theory, would make the world better with these kinds of beileves, so the specifics don't really mater, but what the religion commands you to do IS. and the normal ones, (catholicism, bhuddist) don't have to be right, (which noone can prove or disprove anyways so fighting over this is pointless) the point is, do you want religios people out there with the idea of making the world better, or some pshyco who doens't care mugging you and slitting your throat, just because they don't think it matters? uhh i think the choice the pretty obvious. and yes, if everyone beileved in god crime would be reduced alot, and the psycho killing you for your money usually DOES NOT BELIVE IN GOD (or is carzy enough to think god wants that, but normal people aren't going to do something if they think it will make them a bad person, like as thier religion says not to do...) noone just goes around admitting thier evil, they try to justify it into being right.usually. and God not existing would be one way to do it. so i guess if you are really a good person and don't believe in God i can't make you, but i can argue that most people use religion as a base to decide right and wrong, and keep themselves from doing bad things. and without it, you would NOT like the world we would live in. people are not that smart or enlightned to just never do wrong of thier own free will. it's impossible, but the idea of religion really helps and pushes toward the better, more right way to treat one another, and thus reduces bad things, and can even help bad PEOPLE help themselves,(it's alot easier to stop being a bad person if you have a good reason why to tell yourself, and even more with faith that it really matters what you do in your life. so there ya go. good question by the way.

completely not, many and MOST aetheists are completely good people, likewise, many religious people have done HORRIBLE things throughout history( spanish inquisition) which i might say is even MORE hanus, because they are supposed to be under the viel of what is good and right. aethiests aren't lying about things like "god told me to burn these people at the stake" which in my mind rank up in the highest order of sick things, and there have been supposedly religious people saying such horrid ideas in our history.) in no way do i mean aetheists are generally bad or catagorized in a lower rank than religious people, or commit more crime. alot of them seem to have MORE common sense than some religious people (they are not like, say, fanatics)... aetheists are generally not bad, most neutral people use that specific term to mean they are "nothing" (which is better than satanists) good comment, i thought i would specify. i just mean statictics wise, religion helps many be good, some of which may not even be able to otherwise ( i dunno, i'm not everyone else) thanks, good addition from wideawakepheonix :)
