also theres memory attachments. there are certain songs that hold sentimental memories that make me a little weepy...

I think the association is made based on events that happen which are depressing and a link to certain music is made to those events. Just a theory.

The way the music was written & artistic impression. It can do with inflections, Tone, Beat, if the piece has lyrics... Some writers or composers are masters of writing music that creates a variety of emotions!

Well, that is part of the awesome power of music. Probably, movies have also reinforced our tendency to associate mood and music. Of course, movie makers did not invent that. Peoples have done that for a long time. We must thank the great classical masters because they developed and perfected the way music can modify our moods.
