Was there any pain or did you just wake up like that? Miscarriages are very, VERY painful, and you would know it if you had one. You'd spend hours cramping and passing blood and clots because the uterus is expelling the fetus and placenta. (sorry for being so graphic) Did you get a diagnoses on what caused it? I know PID can cause excessive bleeding if not treated right away. You should probably visit your gyno immediately.

They most certainly can tell you if you were pregnant. I have had this happen, when I had a miscarriage, they will also, give you a D&C. Someone isnt telling the truth.

Thanks for your comments. They didn't give me a D&C, they said they did a test to see if I was pregnant but the results couldn't confirm either way for sure. I've never experienced this before or since, however a few years later I started to lose actual blood clots (looked like lumps of blood with mucus). Both times I never experienced any unusual pain, just the normal aches and pains I get down there. A few years ago myself and partner tried for a baby for 2 and half years with no luck. I had a camera and dye test which showed my cervix was closed and they also discovered I have Endometriosis. I'm very confused over what is happening down there, and can't lay to rest the possibility I may have been pregnant, I need to know for sure either way. During all this time I've relocated, and trying to explain everything to each doctor is very stressful especially when all my doctors notes don't seem to be where they should be! Oh, and no they didn't give me a diagnosis of what caused it, they said it was probably just another period! Which really upset me because I'd already had a normal period 2 weeks prior to that happening, and this was nothing like a period! I had a very upsetting time with the doctor involved at the hospital, details of which I won't go into, but I should have made some complaints about him at the time. He was overly personal.
