  • Yes, parents should be held responsible. CPS is a possibilty and so is jail time. Truancy is against the law.
  • Yes. Make them go back to class and spend countless hours on how to be a more responsible, tough parent.
  • Not if the child is over the age of criminal responsibility. In England that's aged 10. If they're breaking the law by not going to school, they should be held responsible, the same as they would be if they stole something or murdered someone. You honestly can't make a child go to school if they're really determined not to. If the state believes the parent is neglecting their duty of care by failing to ensure the child attends school, then surely removing the child from the home would make more sense. I'm sure a lot of parents would be relieved.
  • I worked in a school attendance office and the parents didn't care where their kids were. They had to work or they had to sleep. If more parents had to get up, take time off from work and come to school for a week with thier kid to make sure they get in the classroom, or if the parents had to pay a fine for each truant child, each day, there would be a big change in truancy. There are many parents who think it's their kids job to get up and go.
  • I read a newspaper article on how this is being handled in the state of Connecticut. Parents of truant children have been summoned to Probate Court. There has been a program established to resolve the problems the parents and children are experiencing. It has been very successfull so far. The penalty for parents who don't comply and allow their children to remain truant is their guardianship could be challenged in court. I'm not sure if that is the best possible punishment.
  • Yes, fined.
