Any American who's ever completed high school should know plenty about the Civil War.

I know quite a bit about the Civil War. The Battles of Vicksburg captured the Mississippi River outlets for the north. Picket's Charge was one of the stupidest war moves ever. Good job Lee... The Appomattox Courthouse ended the war when Lee surrendered to Grant. I can name a few more, but I don't remember the significance of them

The fundamental issue was States Rights, of which the choice of slavery in a state was a manifestation of that point. The South did fear that the North, and with Lincoln in the White House as its leader, would try to abolish slavery in the Southern states. But Lincoln did not campaign as an abolitionist and indeed did not favor abolition in the states that already had slavery. He did say that he wanted to prevent the extension of slavery into the new states and territories. The South wanted to preserve its States Rights power - the Nullification Acts they had passed and then repealed were an earlier example of their attempt to support that power. Slavery and abolition are looked upon by many as a separate issue and while it has been the premier identification of what the Civil War was about it was still all based upon the States Rights predominance over the encroachment of the Federal government.
