get drafted

I am now too old to be drafted. However, this is something that I considered back when I was eligible. My decision was that, if the draft were reinstated, would probably go to the nearest Air Force recruiter and sign up before I got drafted.

It depends on the war the draft was for. If I strongly supported the war then I would enlist with the air force. If I felt the war was unjust, I would take advantage of my Canadian citizenship and move to Canada.

Hopefully I'll be in Canada by then, sitting on the beach sipping a margarita. LOL

I'm too old to be drafted, but I've thought about this a lot. A lot of young men get sucked into being soldiers by what I consider "deceptive" means. This includes patriotic speeches, manipulative philosophical and romantic ramblings about duty and honor, etc. The bottom line about being a soldier is that you're signing up to kill other human beings, and possibly to be killed yourself. This is a very serious matter, and saying "I'm a patriot" doesn't let you off the hook for making wise moral choices -- even at 18 years old. The arguments about the moral basis for war will rage on endlessly, I suppose: it seems to be our curse that we both (a) divide ourselves into conflicting factions and (b) kill those "other" factions when the going gets tough. But one thing I'm sure of is that identifying with a country, symbol, or set of ideas is always a mistake. It represents confused thinking about what it means to have an "identity". To then compound that mistake by having it be the basis for killing surely represents the apex of ignorance. That doesn't mean there might not be some situation in which it is right to kill -- it just means its a bad idea to get carried away on some patriotic wave. Ultimately each individual must make their own choices and live with the consequences.

Fight. What if I didn't go, and some soldier gets killed cause I wasn't there to cover his ass? Then his soul is on my conscience, because I was too scared to fight and turned my back on the people who needed me.

That's a very good question. However, hear me out about some things: A lot of sources today, say that we're in WWIII now. Also, a lot of knowledgable people say, it's only a matter of time before we're hit again. Add on to all this, that it appears we're moving slowly or we're just waiting for the next hit .... one of these days, they will sneak in the big-one or look at a map and count the number of large cities in America, not really that many. So, I feel the need to ask, what are we waiting on? They are at War against us, they haven't given up, they intend to kill us .... why don't we declare war, stop what we're doing and everyone put the effort in to end this ASAP and just get it done and over with. The longer we deny it, the longer we wait, the eventuality is that with time, they will accomplish their goal, so why wait, why give them the time? Amen

i'm too old for the draft. my sons (15 & 22)would not go unless i saw some senators sons in line. i would not let my sons be sent over-seas. i would see to it they weren't "fit" to serve. you hear me CIA?

Cross my fingers and hope I do not get called in.

I would faithfully follow the orders issued to me by the president of the united states and report for basic at the time given. I don't want to go but orders are orders and I would never turn down an order from my country.

well, since bush and company have raised the age limits for the military many more of us are eligible than we realize. i believe it's 45 now. though me being prior service doesn't entirely count me out and depending on whether or not my current medical condition is taken care of in the event of a draft it would very much depend on the nature of the conflict. if it were for iraq or an illegal war like that, i'd dodge it. if it were a legitimate war then i'd do as i was ordered whether i agreed with the war or not.
