Damage to electronics due to ESD (Electro Static Discharge) is, in my opinion, way over-rated...but it DOES happen. Of the 100,000 or so computer-like objects I've sparked against, only once in my life have I caused damage. That was to an ethernet port on a switch after walking accross carpet on a dry day at a customer's site, then touching the copper connections at the end of a still-plugged-in network cable. It can and does happen...just not all that often.

Our junior high Computer teacher always made us "ground" ourselves upon entering the computer lab, before touching any part or component of the computers. The chairs all had metal legs and he'd go around, checking off names on his list as he watched each and every one of us touch the legs with both hands. Only then could we begin working/playing on the computers.

all it takes to blow out a computer is a very minor static shock, a small static shock carries well over 40,000 volts, enough to fry the transistors in a microprocessor, and other semiconductors.
