  • Yeah....um.....ok...that story is just a myth. German was never even CLOSE to becoming th official language of the US. The story goes that German almost became the official language in 1776...but lost by one vote...because one of the German language supporters was visiting the congressional outhouse. There was never any such vote in 1776. In 1795, the 3rd Congress did consider and reject a petition by German Americans in Virginia to translate all federal laws into their language, but this proposal dealt with translating US laws into German, not into making German the primary and official language of the US.
