  • Rather uncharacteristically yet somewhat explained, Hitler expressly ordered that all Battlefields, monuments and memories of the great war be left untouched and undamaged wherever possible. As Hitler was a veteran of the great war (Corporal in 1918, Chancellor in 1938)he remembered his days as a runner in the trenches and vowed to respect the fallen soldiers of both sides. This was an express command to the German Army, however Allied command were also aware of the sensitivity back home and kept their side of the agreement. Most of the memorials were in Belgium and therefore bypassed the main skirmishes, yet the ones in France were respected on the whole.
