Yes. Grades are all about math. If you have 4 assignments, for instance, and each is worth 25% of the grade then blowing one off (regardless of whether you do it or get a zero on it) = ruining 25% of your grade. It is straight math. "F" is the equivalent of you did so poorly, I will not allow you to obtain any credit for it. F=none=zero=zilch=zippo=nul=void=empty set=nothing. Regardless of what you call it, it factors into zero.

No. In college usually grades are percentages not letters. Therefore you can get a 20% on an assignment and that is still more than getting nothing. Another things is professors often have a small percentage of their grade as participation. If the professor thinks your not participating to your fullest potential it can then hurt your grade. I have found most professors easy to talk to. If you are having difficulty in the class speak to the professor and see if s/he has any suggestions.

Grades are all based on percentages. It would be much better to get a 60% (or whatever % an F is) than 0%.
