When playing my iPod through my home sound system (Sony Receiver) the volume on the receiver has to be turned up much louder (voume about 50) than when I am using the receiver tuner and listening to FM (volume about 28). Why?

Maybe because the songs on your iPod are much softer than what radio stations play their music and so to hear it better you need to raise the volume. Check iTunes settings and see if there's anything about volume limits or anything as such. (Check in preferences) -
