Just thought I'd mention Terry Goodkind is a good author aswell. He writes the same kind of stuff as Robert Jordan. Sword Of Truth is his best series yet.

-
Candide by Voltaire. For many reasons.
-
The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. It's a work of art and genius. The way she uses the English language is beautiful, poetic and magical.
-
The Bridge by Iain Banks. It is beautifully written, showing great mastery of the medium, and it tells a really good story in a very engaging way. A great ending too!

Best is hard. Funniest would be "Feeling Sorry for Celia" by Jaclyn Moriarty, but I don't know if I'd call it best, although I do hold humor in very high regard. Definitely up there would be the following: Fall on Your Knees by Ann Marie MacDonald Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller 1984 by George Orwell
-
Catch-22 is the best book I have ever read. It is closely followed by Candide by Voltaire and Time's Arrow by Martin Amis.
-

-
Angels and Demons, dan brown.

"Cat's Cradle" is up there, as are "Siddhartha" and "Native Son". There are too many books to call one the best. Did I enjoy reading "Native Son" or "Black Boy"? No. They were deeply upsetting. But they were meaningful, potent, explosive. I did enjoy reading the Redwall series, but I don't consider them to be high quality literary works. It is complicated. There are many great books out there. I've only had a small sample.
-
The Best book I've ever read, was Memoirs of a Geshia. I liked it because it was very detailed, and it had alot of things that a person could understand and compare to.

The book of Judges in the bible. It is full of exitement, scary people and a mixture of good and bad managemant of the land of Israel. It is one of the most relevent books for today. We understand from it how stupid leaders can be and are therefore never surprised at what happens on the world scene today. It also speaks of God's patience and grace with undeserving man.
-
Fight Club- Palahniuk, Chuck

For me the best Sci-Fi would be Isaac Asimov's Robot/Empire/Foundation series, rather than a single book. Likewise A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickett is the best childrens' series I know. The most interesting book I have probably read, though, would be The Master And Margerita, by Mikael Bulgakov. Written during the Soviet era, it couches the story that he wants to get across in such allegory that you have to really read the book, then read it again and again, to understand and pick up the nuances. What amazing writing, to get this past the regime.
