It helps stop spam that is *sent* from Yahoo Mail, but not the spam that is *received* from Yahoo Mail. My guess is that if you look at the spam you receive, not very much of it comes from a @yahoo.com email address.

Why they require this, is because several people out there have started using "bots" (short for robots) which are programs that go to sites like yahoo mail and send out millions of e-mails at a time. If yahoo mail generates a random set of 'visual only' characters when you send an e-mail then there is no way a bot will be able to "see" the characters. Most times the characters are slightly misshapened so that you can see what they are but a program wouldn't recognize them. Therefore these bots can't use yahoo mail to send the millions of messages asking if you want to buy a watch or get part of your anatomy enlarged. Of course eventually some enterprising programmer will write a character recognition program that will work with the limitations of the visual media and bypass that kind of protection. But until then it works. Hope this helps.
