  • Here it is...
  • It looks like a poppy to me
  • It looks like a tulip... but i cant see all of the flower...
  • It looks like a tulip. When it finishes flowering dig it up and if it's growing from a bulb it's definitely a tulip (in my non-expert opinion).
  • I'll go with the idea that it's a poppy. It's kind of pretty. Hope it really isn't a noxious weed.
  • Based on the shape and coloring, I am going with a california poppy.
  • Judging by the leaves as well as the flower, it's definitely a tulip. Poppies have much fuzzier and completely different pistols and stamen and leaves. (I've grown both)
  • It's a red tulip with a yellow and black eye. In Persia, this flower is the symbol of love. http://www.flowerstories.net/meaning-of-tulip-flowers.html I will try to find a picture and text together. -- Found one: http://www.laurenpritchardphotography.com/Gallery.html a little less than halfway down the page. Your plant was probably buried there by a squirrel last fall as he/she buried food for the winter.
  • It's a tulip for sure. The flower, the leaves. Dig underground and you will find the bulb. They could be leftover bulbs too little to bloom last year but this year they have matured.
  • Definately a tulip - you can tell from the stigma, etc and the markings inside. Very pretty, and comes up every year.
  • Yep, tulip. Tulip's are grown from bulbs so, strangely, unless you bought the house within the past year or two it's odd that you'd just now noticed them! Tulip's need to 'winter' and the bulbs need to mature before they will grow. It's possible that that hadn't wintered sufficiently or matured enough to bloom last year. They also need to be pointed in the right direction when they are planted, in order to grow upwards, so maybe they were askew, delaying their development?
