Aerodynamically, the bumblebee is capable of flight. Our understanding of aerodynamics at the point where someone declared it should be impossible was flawed, and we learned from discovering something we thought shouldn't be possible. It's an important message, to keep going, always try things, and keep an open mind. The pedant in me wishes they'd say "Aerodynamically, we originally thought that the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly," though!

The origin of that quote was always a joke, by a scientist who actually meant "we don't yet know how a bumble-bee flies". The quote was quite a long time ago, and high speed photography and better computer simulations have shown how a bumble-bee does fly. It was a joke, which has been taken out of context, either ignorantly or maliciously, to make a cheap point. The only solution is that jokes should be banned by law, and comedians thrown into concentration camps. The world will be a much sadder place - but no-one will be misunderstood again.
