  • Im not sure that there are laws against it.. BUt I do think they are really really really stupid. Doing something for your temporary satisfaction that could have long term defects on your childs health. Grrrrr. ~+~
  • There should be laws against women getting pregnant in the first place! Most are too damn stupid to take care of the child anyway!
  • Well i really dont think you could stop women from doing this stuff... its stupid... i agree... but there really not much people can do about it...
  • I don't think there are any laws against it per se. I do know that if a pregnant woman's blood alcohol level is tested, for whatever reason, and it is above the legal limit she can be charged with child endangerment in many states. I don't think there are any laws against smoking.
  • I'm not sure what troubles it will bring to pregnant women, but I think it must be harmful. Laws is necessary here to against it. This is not just a protection of pregnant women, it is also good for the babies and baby have rights of their health.
  • I think it's ridiculous to make these things legal and available, allow people to become addicted and then make a law against them.
  • I hate to see a women smoking and drinking while pregnant. No there should not be a law against it. Freedom of choice. There are probably all sorts of arguments regarding to health of the baby, but what can anyone do about it. It's the woman's choice.
  • You couldn't make it a law, because people make their own choices, and even if it was a law, when do people ever follow it? Do you speed once in awhile when driving? Clinics and hospitals will try to help those and encourage pregnant women to quit, but they can't make them, they will give out pamphlets for them to read on the effects cigarettes and alcohol will do to their baby, and there also classes they can go to. I know that pregnant women out there seem not to care what their doing, and the effects that it does, so I completely understand why your against pregnant women hurting their child before the child's even born. That poor child is the one getting hurt.
  • It is horrible and child abuse and neglect!!!!! I think that in Michigan there is a law but I am not sure, if there isn't there should be!!!
  • it makes my blood boil - they dont deserve to have children
  • It pisses me off, and I usually comment on it. In my home, I don't allow it. Only those legally old enough to do so, may light up or take a drink! Pregnant women, if they chose to light up, or grab a cocktail, would be given the choice to ash out, get a soda, or leave! Same choices I would give a minor in the same situation.
  • This makes me so mad, is it that babies fault that their parents do this crap. They are supposed to be innocent little babies and they are born addicted to something. Than the parents get mad when they cry all the time, but take that stuff from the parents and they would scream and cry too. Why don't they just stick alcohal in their bottle or a cig in their hand straight out of the womb. They are working on a law here in IL. that prohibits them from smoking in a car with children under a certain age. It's about time someone stood up for these kids. They also just passed a law here that you can not smoke in any public building or within 15 ft of a doorway. it's great now when I want to go out I don't have to pay for other ppls stupidity!:)
  • It isn't the law and shouldn't be the law. Way to many of these common sense decisions are being taken out of our hands and made illegal. The minute you do that people no longer have to take responsibility for their own actions and make their own decisions so they just don't think about the consequences anymore. I think what they need to do is educate people better so they are able to make better informed decisions over these things.
  • speaking from personal experience, i feel it should b law. Without going into detail, iv discovered recently my mum smoked n drank while she was pregnant with my brother, and its caused a lot of unneccesary heartache. i feel it should b introduced to protect th unborn. when he/she is old enough, then they can make that decision to put those chemicals in their body. when they are still in th womb, i feel its selfish of th mother to do so.
  • I think that every situation is different & you can't go around judging people for their actions especially not knowing their circumstances. I understand it's all about the health of the baby. I also have been told by doctors that when a mother is addicted to certain substances that it can be harmful to the unborn child to go through the withdrawals of that substance. I'm going to let you in on a personal story. My first pregnancy, I was 17 years old (3 months short of 18), I did everything right, quit smoking cigarettes, didn't drink, took my prenatal vitamins, walked alot, ate the right foods, etc. When I was about 5 months pregnant, I had an amnio done & found out that my baby had Down's Syndrome.Because I was so young, they wanted me to terminate my pregnancy. I refused whole heartedly. When it came time to deliver the baby, she ended up passing away while I was in labor.I had an autopsy done, & she had something wrong with just about every organ in her body & the actual cause of her death was her heart was not strong enough to beat on it's own, so, basically I was literally keeping her alive for 9 1/2 months.Well, about 8 years later, I found out I was pregnant again,I was so scared, I just couldn't go through that again. I had some problems with the pregnancy (i.e., spotting in the beginning, lots of cramping,ALOT of morning, afternoon & night sickness, etc.) So, in my mind, even though I was pregnant, I wasn't gonna have a baby at the end of this 10 months.I couldn't eat anything, well, I could, I just couldn't keep it down. So, one day, I took a pull off of my friend's blunt(marijuana) & low & behold, I was able to keep food down, just off of one pull, so I started doing that to eat, I had cut down on my smoking cigarettes, I went from a pack a day to about 5 a day. My doctor knew about this & said it was ok, 'cause it would be worse for the baby to have to go through the withdrawal symptoms.I'm happy to report that my beautiful, healthy baby girl was born 2 weeks before my due date (my first daughter was also 2 weeks early). She is now almost 3 years old & is perfectly healthy. I said ALL that to say that you can't just say this is right & this is wrong, it's not so black & white, there are some gray areas.I hope sharing my story helped. :)
  • It's fine with me.
  • I think if you are too selfish to give up for nine months, then you are going to be too selfish to give a child the attention it will need when born. my sister has just had a son, and she was given conflicting advice, with some telling her to abstain from alcohol completely, and some saying she could have two glasses of wine a week (on different days) and it would be okay. She gave up alcohol completely, as she said if there is any risk at all, however minor, of permanently damaging her unborn child for the rest of his life, then why take the chance? especially for ONE glass of wine.
  • Considering that this is causing deliberate harm to the fetus, I think that this should be illegal and, if necessary, the mother should be locked up. Everyone knows the damage that alcohol does to fetuses and most now know the damage cigarettes do to fetuses. I believe that a woman who uses drugs should face the same. I am certain I am going to be hit with a flurry of DR's... that is fine. I have seen the result of fetal alcohol syndrome and I have seen the result of in vitro smoking. One of my friends suffers, to this day, due to her mother smoking. She has an enlarged heart due to her COPD and is probably going to die from it. Her COPD is linked directly to her mother smoking during pregnancy and parents chain smoking while raising my friend. My friend has never smoked a single cigarette and is going to die from complications of in vitro and passive smoking. Before you say that I am being extreme, go spend a shift in a NICU (neonatal ICU) and do some studying into Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the results of in vitro smoking.
  • I find all this a little odd. You want to outlaw smoking while pregnant but abortion is ok. Am I missing something? I have had three children and one has downs. I behaved while I was pregnant but I would rather see a woman smoke before I see a woman have an abortion. We can't have it both ways. We can not tell a woman what to do while pregnant when the law says that a fetus isn't a person until birth. The law allows us to kill our children. Why would they tell us what we can and can't do if they don't recognize the fetus as a living person?
  • Too many laws already! Somewhere along the way people have to make choices-bad or good- for themselves.
  • No, they should pass laws against people who keep wanting to tell other people what to do all the time.
  • If we were to pass such laws, we would then have to watch each individual's actions, in the privacy of their homes, or access their med records, in order to enforce the law. I don't think we should go there. Education and social acceptance, I think is as far as a society should go, in regulating such behavior. I know this does not completely protect those that have no voice, but the consequences of passing such legislation, would ensure their, and our silence, regarding law.
  • Her body, her choice. She can pass out drunk every night if she wants.
  • NO LAWS. I don't think it's wise but we don't need a law to govern every aspect of our life. Get out of the kindergarten mentality people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • It would be a great law, protecting an innocent human life from abuse. What is the government for if not to protect the innocent from violations of their rights? But, it would be almost impossible to enforce.
  • No cuz a glass of wine is just fine... And ive seen alotta babies born just fine with women who smoked their entire pregnancy....(infact all of em) ...But. Im not saying its right. But it is a choice that should be made. "Their bodies their babies" right? Isnt that what all the fighting is about with "other pregnancy issues?" ...anyways. No it should not be illigal.
