Hard to answer since you do not define 'efficient.' do you mean energy efficient - energy out compared with energy in? space efficiency? Cost efficiency? Weight? I'm sure there are other ways battery efficiency could be defined.. In terms of space and weight, Lion seems to win the day, which is why so many portable devices use it. For cost, lead acid seems to win the day, even though it's old and heavy. It is also very good on really high currents.
