  • Thrilled to hear you're trying hydroponics and hope to read of your progress, Hineybuns! I'm a container gardener right now, for the most part, because I rent.. 90% of cuttings can be started in water on the windowsill, provided they are not *woody* stems. Simply cut 3-5 inches from the top, above a 2-leaved break. This allows the living plant to restart (or branch) growth and gives your cutting enough room to root. You'll strip the 'bottom' (closes to cut) portion of your cutting of its leaves and place in water --pref glass container-- for 10-14 days, depending on the species. You'll need to change the H2o every 3-4 days to prevent algae growth, but should see root growth w/in 7 days. THIS WORKS WITH GREEN stems only. Woody stems require a different method. Here are a couple of websites you might find useful, but I find that simpler is better... http://www.uvm.edu/pss/ppp/pubs/oh5cuts.html http://gardening.about.com/od/gardenprimer/ss/Cuttings_6.htm http://www.gardening-tips-perennials.com/plantcuttings.html
