  • because its the religious mob that always needs to prop up there flawed reasonings and fairy stories
  • Personally...I'm not one for forcing my beliefs on others. That's part of the reason I reject organized religion. It's not for me. I won't be told how to believe and what to believe in. And I wouldn't be caught dead telling anyone else how to believe and what to believe in.
  • Some do, and some religious people don't push their beliefs. In fact, I think the majority of them don't. Fanatics on either side are equally as annoying. Actually no, religious zealots are really flipping annoying - but that's probably a biased thought.
  • ha.. youve got to be joking.. atheists have over two thousand court cases in court actively at this very moment and hundreds of thousands of cases over the last 30 years. they have 3 cases in the supreme court in the last year. you have got to be in lala land, sorry .
  • Madalyn Murray O'Hair is one who comes to mind. She is the lady who managed to get prayer out of US schools, and had a public and very vocal campaign against TV programmes such as "Touched by an Angel". She founded American Atheists, "a nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of non-believers, works for the separation of church and state, and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy." She acted as the group's first chief executive officer. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madalyn_Murray_O'Hair They exist, my friend, and are as evangelical as any Christian Muslim or whatever.
  • IMO most athiests dont really care... :)
  • Richard Dawkins promotes atheism so does Sam Harris. They're both writers. At times they're just as annoying about atheism as a christian is annoying about christianity.
  • I believe most of us just don't give a damn about what people believe, as long as they don't start to use their religion as arguments in discussions or try to indoctrinate us to pick up their religion
  • in my view, because the reason they became atheists in the first place was because they didn't want or need to be told what to beleive in, and were happy knowing there wasn't anyone out there.in the first case, i don't beleive in forcing your religion on others, and in the second, how do you promote something that doesn't exist?
  • Certain religious people do a better job of converting people to Atheism than we ever could.
  • As others have said, there are a few atheists who actively promote atheism. But you are correct that the majority do not, because there is nothing to be gained by doing so. If you don't have a soul, it cannot be saved; if there is no god, then he/she/it/they doesn't want converts. So the only time atheists make a fuss, generally, is when someone else's religion imposes on us. So if you insist on our children saying prayers, we will object (and it is no use saying they can opt-out - no child wants the stigma of being the only one doing so). And when your religious views affect my life (usually in the area of marriage/relationships/sex) I may well object.
  • In order to see the fallacy of this question all that you have to do is look through the various religious discussion here on AB. Look at the posts that openly mock religion. Look at the question and answers that equate religion to brainwashing. Look at the posts by people that pretty open advocate forcing all religion out of all public discourse. Look at all the people who have bought into the erroneous idea that the US constitution calls for a complete separation between church and state. (No, it is not in there nor did those that wrote the Constitution ever advocate such a thing.) Atheists may not go door to door trying to convert people to their beliefs, but there are many who do actively promote it by attacking the the religions of others, ridiculing those that do believe, and trying to force them out of the public square. ------- Addendum: After I posted my original answer, another example of atheist actively promoting atheism occurred to me. This other example is what is occurring in academia these days. Religion has not only been taken out of publicly funded schools, but it is actively attacked in these institutions. This is especially true of Christianity. For a rather detailed look at how this is occurring in the public schools check out this article (http://www.newswithviews.com/Chapman/michael1.htm). There have been other examples of this at various state sponsored institutions of higher learning as well.
  • Sure, they may not have the same organization but pushy people are everywhere. Don't think you can escape because you can't.
  • Because athiests don't really need more people to put money in their collection plate or government grants in order to survive. In fact atheists don't really have a collection plate or an organized church. You never see a building dedicated to atheism. At least I've never seen one. I imagine an atheist meeting would be kind of boring anyway. What would they talk about? "........ Uhhhhhh....... Uhhhhhh........ Religion is bullshit.......... Yeah........ That is all....... See you guys next Sunday."
  • You just haven't noticed. Their belief system is inveigled in nearly every aspect of the media, from the average sitcom to the latest Star Trek rerun. It's so rampant that you simply don't see it anymore. But think about how surprised you are when the regular Media makes ANY kind of religious statement. The promotion of atheism is there, it's just being expertly handled.
