You can prune them anytime and they will send up new growth but mostly from the bottom of the plant. Lilac's bloom on two year old wood, so if you want a shaply hedge that requires prunning several times a year, don't expect much bloom. Cut out to a few inches above ground the oldest one third of the bush, so that in three years you will have all new growth. Remove the smallest suckers and let the larger ones grow. A sucker will bloom the third year.

You're reading I have about 5 lilac bushes along side of my house and they have become unruly! They are very scraggly. I want to know if I can cut them back to look more like a hedge and maybe they will fill out. I don't know if this will kill them or no
