Question

Help answer this question below.

My 6 year old daughter is afraid of movie theaters and the loud sound effects. She will typically say that she wants to go, but when we get there, she cries, screams, and repeatedly says, "I don't want to go." Help! What can I do to help her?

I believe they sell those foam ear plugs (the kind factory workers use) at the pharmacy. They could help with the sound effects. It might be worth your going alone first, to find where the loud parts are so you know when to expect them. If you know when something's coming up, warn her, but many use the loud noises to get you to jump in your seat at surprising times. (If it makes YOU jump, what will it do to HER?)

As for the theater, you need to go early (at least 15 minutes), so she can look around (Or stay afterward, if there's a few minutes before the next showing). Try to explain that it's just a HUGE living room with a HUGE TV screen that only shows one moive (usually with commercials - trailers). Strangers pay the theater to see that special show.

It's also possible that she does or WILL associate the fear of the theater and noises with crowds. If you go early, or wait until most people are out of the theater (watch the credits all the way through) you will usually avoid most of them.

And if there are second-run "kid" movies she loves, even if you have and she watches it on VCR/DVD at home, take her to a couple of them. It will help show her that the movies are the same, they're just louder in the theater.

    Good luck! ;-)

She's only six - despite what she says, why can't you just make excuses and not go to the movie theatre. Why can't you just not take her again until she's older?

Why does she have to go to a movie theater? She probably has very sensitive hearing and the noise hurts. You certainly don't want her to lose her hearing, so why make her go there. Besides, it has been decades since I've seen a movie that is truly suitable for a six year old, so why subject her to it. My five year old has never been in a movie theater. I've not been inside one since the Lord of the Rings.
