  • I was born in Canada, came to America in 1969. I was docked for spelling the British way.
  • I would hope not. I am American but spell British all the time...
  • Teachers should not penalise their students for wanting to use the different spelling of words which is also referred to in the actual dictionary. I do not live in the states but all schools in my country follow and is much similar to that of the Cambridge (British) education.
  • If you're trying to make a case for using the British spelling of words, then I think it would a stronger case if you used British spelling and terminology for "all" of the words, and not just "some" of them. :/ Other than that, if it lent authenticity to the essay to spell particular words with an alternate spelling, then I don't think it should be downgraded. If the alternate spellings are out of context and provide no value to the essay, then I think you are not using the language skills taught in by that class/school system and should be marked down. Essays are a teaching method to evaluate that you have learned what was taught.
  • I think you have to acknowledge the spelling system of the region you live in. If I were staying any length of time in America, and if what I was doing involved correct spelling, I would use the American spelling. (I am Aussie and we use British). I had a similar quandary when I was teaching Indonesian years ago. I had Malaysian students in my class. Their Malay was excellent and it is really the same language (with dialiectical differences) but the spelling is very different. For them to pass an Indonesian exam, they had to learn Indonesian spelling.
  • I am English but also lived in America for 7 years and I just adjusted my spelling (and at times my pronunciation although that was more subconcious) to where I lived at the time. When in Rome do as the Romans do and all that!
