I have fired employees for theft. I fired one for sexually harrassing a co-worker. And I fired a guy for lying repeatedly to customers.

    1. Fraud / misappropriation of assets / material financial misstatement
    2. Absenteeism / Repeated tardiness
    3. Discrimination / Intimidation / Harrassment

Sorry if that appears to be eight reasons, not three as requested, but I group them like this because they are closely related and equal in severity, IMHO.

If they perform below the standards expected and/or below anyone elses standards because your company is only as strong as the weakest employee.

Naturally any policy violation or repeat violation...follow the documentation and termination rules and regs all the time.

    Attitude counts.

    Depends on the workplace.

Higher level: (tech company, finance, etc)
-Stealing intellectual property, number one. Terminate and pursue.
    -Not pulling their weight.
-Not keeping up with current developments in the field.

Lower level: (Sales, back office, etc)
    -Absentee
    -Sleeping repeatedly on the job
-Causing problems with co-workers, whether that be violent, sexual, verbal, whatever

The single most important thing to do in business is to ask yourself "Is this an asset or a liability?" So go ahead and ask yourself "Is this employee helping us or costing us more money?"

Incompetence has been the root of most of the firings I have done. One guy was highly certified and interviewed really well, but when it came down to practical application he was unable to demonstrate even basic skills. I have several uncertificated workers who out performed these basic tasks at rates unbelievable to me. If most workers can make 40 widgets, or lets say welds and hour and someone is making 12. They have issues.

I have also removed personel for inspiring and sowing hate and dissent among the ranks. I had a guy who flat out asked how everyone was compensated. He made a chart and made a chart of industry average for our area. He would share this with anyone, who might be interested. Employees constantly came to my door asking for more money. There is only a limited pool of resources. I cant run the company into the ground for a couple of employees who are par and get compensated as such. Two personnel ended up quitting and one gave up their source of malcontent. I was unable to let the poisonous influence go at first, because I needed the man power. After I hired on a new employee and she was spun up, I let the guy go.

I would definitely get rid of someone for theft. I have never had this problem but if I did. Out the door.

    1. Attitude. I worked with a girl recently who had a FILTHY mouth and extremely negative attitude at work, and was VERY nosy, but they wouldn't fire her ass, even though she totally deserved it.

    2. Incompetence. (very high in the computer field)

    3. Not showing up for work or regularly making excuses about not being able to come in.

    1) If the employee doesn't listen to my directions and succeeds, that's fine, but if he/she fails, they're fired.
    2) If they hit on my spouse (if I had one), they're fired.
    3) If I found out they were bad mouthing me behind my back, they'd be sacked.
