Religion being the opium of the people, what does an overdose (lethal?) look like?

I think an overdose of anything looks like people speaking the party line without giving much thought, much individual thought, to why they do what they do. But to me that would mean it's not religion that is the opium, but governments that are the pushers of the greatest drugs, whether they use religion, which they have greatly and often in the past or they hide it by calling it nationalism. Religions by themselves have not taken hold of people the firmest. It's been when the governments use it or misuse it. Religion by itself only affects a small percentage of the people, usually with not much power.

Unfortunately, when one overdoses on religion, they tend to harm others, not themselves. Sometimes, though they just offend everyone around them and act like morons, hold up signs with horrible offensive crap on them ( westboro pics) Updates this answer to include the westboro pics as further examples of people going too far!

hamas, hezboallah (the party of god), the mullahs in iran, the deification of people like stalin, hitler, mao tse-tung, kim il sung, kim jung il, paul pot, iatollah khomeni and (dare I say it).. no, I won't. Any politician that assumes on god like attributes or has pseudo-messianic followers. You can say that religion is mans attempt to reach up to God. What is more important, and more true is God's will in reaching down to man. I don't think you will find a leader more against religion than Jesus Christ. He had very little good to say about the religious leaders of his day. Study his words and actions. He is the man you can trust to follow, and not necessarily those who only claim to follow him.
