Help answer this question below.
This is perfectly legal as long as you are not part of a conspiracy to commit auto theft.
I would be wary of doing such, how often does someone legitimately need to know how to do such things? They can easily call a repair shop, or a roadside assistance in such situations.
What if the starter motor is broken and you just want to get your car to a repair shop? What if your key broke in the ignition and it's stuck? I think there are legitimate reasons for knowing how to hot wire a car! :) But maybe I am being naive here! :(
I'd let that one alone. Let 'em call AAA.
It's no big secret.

Yea, I'd refrain from posting such info on the net.
You are correct.
This is like a bar selling alcohol to a drunk. he leaves the bar, gets behind the wheel and kills innocent people.
Is the bar partially responsible for this situation by selling a drunk alcohol?
Yes. both civil and criminal
The same could apply by giving a person information on how to "hot wire" and automobile.
You would need proof and telling the world on Answerbag is definite proof in court.
As long as you have proof that you are unaware of the intentions of the individual or persons you gave the information too you are ok. If the person or persons tell authorities that he learned to do a criminal act from you you could be found as a co conspiriter. In the long run its best not to even give it. If the person steals a car and gets caught you'll probably never hear about it. If they person hot wires a car and kills the person who owns the car your screwed if it gets back to you.
"Answerbag has a disclaimer releasing it from liability. Do you think about the possiblity of being sued before you respond to questions regarding health, suicide, legal matters or even repair work that could cause damage to an expensive item?"
My question last month. You're getting better answers than I did.
yes it states that aneyone that operates a motor vehical must have in their possion a leagel driving licence . the offence is driveing withe no licence in possion which is low infraction of the law must judges will dismiss the charge if u produce a leagel licence and present it to the court this is not like the offence like driving on supended or revoked licence which are ounishable with fines and up to one year in the county jaol if u have prior offences
Who even got close to answering that question?
I can build a bomb, but I will not tell a stranger how to build one unless I am face to face and have two confirmations that I know that say that the person needs that information.
It is not only the questioner who would see your answer but thousands of others, I would not give out this sort of info. + :o)

You're reading What is the legality of answering a question like "How do I hotwire my car, HELP!" I'd like to help, but it seems to me like giving out burglar's and car thief's tips.

But you don't know if you are involving yourself in a crime. So the intent was not there, but the action is. This is a tricky area.

Which means there is no crime. Every crime has two elements: 1) actus rea (criminal act), and 2) mens rea (criminal intent). Here, none of these elements are met. You certainly don't have criminal intent. And you have not done an act that constitutes a crime. Even if you were part of a criminal conspiracy, the act of telling another how to commit a crime is still not illegal. Rather, the criminal act is being part of the conspiracy.

True, I guess legally a person would be able to be cleared, but if someone asks you how to commit a crime, it could be impied that you are part of the crime if you give them the knowledge/tools to commit the crime.
