Think of something work related--- there is ANYthing? If not, ask her, tactfully, to lunch or something like that. It's hard to say-- not knowing where you work or the situation.

I would say "Hi" to her when I walked into work and that's it. Then maybe the next day, "Hi, how are you doing today?" This will hopefully start some small talk between you two. I would make this as part of my daily routine so that everything just appears normal. Also mention anything that looks like she tried to make herself look better or different. Notice any changes in her hairstyle or if she wears anything that matches. Then one day ask her what she's doing for lunch. If all goes well, then she'll say yes.

My old coworker Ann is currently dating one of my old other coworkers. To make this easy, I'm going to put it into present tense, but it was a past job, so don't get confused! Both work in the same department but not on the same team and really have no work-related reason to talk to each other. He liked her, and one day, decided to do something about it. He ordered a single flower and had it delivered to her desk with a note asking to go out for coffee or something to that effect, with his cell number at the bottom. They went out for coffee, which turned into a dinner. The end of the story is, they have been dating now for probably close to a year. Last I heard, they were pretty happy, as well!

Tactful my foot. Get real man, people (not just women) admire a person with courage. Take a deep breath, walk right up, tell her you'd like to get to know her better and will she go out for coffee or lunch. The worst answer you can get is NO and that's where you are right now. How'd you like to meet her fifty years from now and she tells you she's been a spinster all those years because she too was too shy to make the first move. Get with it - today.
