Someone else may give you a more complete or scientific answer, but basically: The mind likes to build on what it already knows. Whether words, colors, smells, concepts, experience of whatever, it recalls things much more easily if it has a 'peg' to hang new knowledge on. Words are simply symbols of things. You associate those things and so the words go along for the ride.
