are you sure it takes 7 continous hrs to reach REM stage? IT takes place in cycles. each cycle lasts about one and a half to two hrs, as sleep goes on becoming deeper and deeper and reaching REM, which lasts for about 15 minutes and then again to the periphery. so, waking in the middle of the night wouldn't leave entirely REM stage deprived! www.sleepdisorderchannel.com/stages Rather one can enhance his quality of sleep drastically with a technique called SSKY. the net effect being that your sleep for about 2 hr is equivalent to 7-8 hr sleep. to know about SSKY follow the external link, then Artcles and FAQ then SSKY-intro and browse until you come to the section on SSKY's effect on sleep www.shabadsuratsangam.org thanks! it's been fun ansering this!

Sun_ny gave a good answer. Also, the more sleep deprived you are the faster you move into REM sleep.

I'm pretty sure it takes only an hour or two and you go in and out of cycles as you sleep. If you are sleep deprived you go straight into REM sleep, which can result in nightmares. The reason you need 7+ hours of sleep is prob.because that's how long it takes to get enough REM sleep cycles in to feel refreshed
