  • I wondered about this too and some research presented me with the idea that historically anyone who was any percent black was considered non-white (I am thinking racism here) when it came to rights and how they were treated and perceived by the world. I confess I do not have any first hand understanding of this but I can certainly see how even if you had a small percent of black lineage, if it was physically apparent, then you would be treated differently than someone who appeared (or is) all white. I also imagine it can be a difficult place to be feeling like you have to ignore a part of yourself to be accepted by one group or another.
