I've read here of some ABers complaining--or just pointing out--about being given "low" points or "downgraded". I hope I'm not being insensitive, but are points really that important? For if they are, why? I mean, Am I missing something?

Your not missing anything, its the people who are obsessed with points who are missing something. AB is for answering questions. It isnt some game to see how high of a level you can get. Its not important. As long as your enjoying yourself. :)

Points are important to some, but not all. I am here to share information, and have fun. I do occasionally gripe about being rated down, but mostly because I want to know WHY somebody found my answer not helpful, it's not about the points.

Lol i do it sometimes just to see if the person that gave me a - would get angry and reply back explaining why. Haha so far it has not happened... >_< wonder why. Since being on here a few have told me why they DR'ed my answer or question. I thanked them (yeah its weird) but they had the guts to tell me. And no points dont matter to me, if they did I would be trying to answer and ask as many questions as I could. Instead I answer a few and chat with people in the comments.

But "points" do reflect a sense of self-accomplishment. A little way of saying to ones self, "I am not just wasting time messing around on AB, I am earning points!"

When you offer an answer and someone down rates it is the same as saying your answer is crap. Our answers are our opinions and no one likes to hear what they are saying is crap. Not a point thing it is more of a pride thing. The thing is the up-rating and down-rating are controlled by points we have no other way to judge this action.

No, they are not. I always chuckle when I get DR'd because I have gotten DR'd for the silliest things. I was DR'd for answering my favourite movie, my favourite Beatles song and because I gave my interpretation of a statement made by John Lennon more then 40 years ago! Go figure. lol However, it IS nice when you receive points, not for the tally per se, but because it means that someone took the time to read your answer or question and appreciated it. That's how I view it.
