What is the point of this questions? Are you asking if southern accents make people sound ignorant, but trying to be coy about it? If so, you did a terrible job of it, which says more about YOUR intellect than ANY accent would. Personally, I'm annoyed by "redneck" drawl and jargon, but I find a proper southern accent charming.

Absolutely not. Nor am I impressed by articulate speech. I've known far too many articulate idiots in my life. I can think of one individual who is always identified as stupid, because he just can't speak without triping over his own words.

I went to a university in Tennessee as an undergraduate and one of my master's degrees is from an institution in Texas. I was born in and grew up in California. Some of the greatest intellectuals I know have Southern drawls.

no, i've been to enough parts of the country and met enough people from around the world to have learned that ones accent has little to do with a persons intelligence. though, when i was a kid, before i first moved down south, i thought little of southerners. i've since changed my mind, i even have a southern accent now ;) from 13 to 35 i'd lived in southern states. i now live in wisconsin and long to be south again.

Not at all, there are uneducated people in the south but there are also teachers, professors, govenors, CEOs, etc. Those people didnt go through college being 'dumb' To criticize someone on their accent is a bit dumb in my opinion.

It depends on how heavy the accent is. I'm from the south and yes, I do have a bit of a southern accent (though i do try to cover it most of the time) and I am far from being a "dumbo".

I'm from Australia, and most of the time, when I hear a southern US accent, it's being used as a sign to the audience that the character speaking is stupid. I think it's pretty lazy; why couldn't they show it in a way that isn't baseless, and derogatory to an entire group of people? But, as I said - most of the time, hearing this accent, it is on television, so most of the time, I immediately assume the accent is coding the stupidity of the character - so yes, I suppose it is an assumption I make.
