  • There is indeed a genetic piece to it, but they genetics aren't as well understood as say, hair color and it's not just genetics that play into it. I would say that if you are unaffected, the chances are slim. One can't give you a specific probability but the possibility does exist.
  • i am in the same position, one of my fathers siblings is diagnosed as schizophrenic. Studing psychology, i was quite interested to learn that the chances of schizophrenia are very low, if you have a member of extended family with schizophrenia, then the chances that you will have it ARE higher, but it is still only very slight chances... i can't recall the actual statisic - but it's still under 3% chance.
