God was there as well. The whole bible being inspired by God he was able to inspire Moses to write the account. To illustrate think of a Boss dictating a letter to a secretary. The Secretary may do the actual writing, even wording things in a way that she is accustomed to doing or in accordance with her education but the actual thoughts or ideas belong to the boss. Ultimitly he is the author as God is in the case of the bible.

Moses wrote the account we have today in Genesis. He learned it either by direct inspiration- God just told him, and that's how he learned it- or it had been told to him, passed down from Adam to his children, so Moses learned it there, and God used him to write that account in the exact wording he wanted.
